Just when you think it is safe to relax (and I really really needed to) things happen!
Day off after full on weekend (details to follow with pics in different post - cos I can!) hearing lots of sirens. Thinking I'm just sensitive to sounds at the moment.... eating toast on the top deck watching some fire guys wander around lots of workmen standing around. Thinking, there is a really bad pong (and I have had a shower) Wonder what is going on.
Fire guy goes wandering into neighbouring childcare centre - no one suddenly starts rushing out. Not worried - just curious. He goes wandering up to apartments up ROW in front of me. Still not worried - was thinking 'this is bloody good toast - quince jam - yum! What is that smell??'
Finally too curious not to ask, so fireguy goes wandering past and I call out, 'Is there a problem?? "We have ruptured a gas main - I advise you to go inside and close any doors and windows, we won't evacuate you yet - but keep inside" "Ok" I find myself saying. Stay inside - is he mad! I'm not staying here! Grabbed my bag and headed out. Some roads were closed off, and there were fire engines blocking the end of the road.
Kept a check on net to see how long it would take to be fixed - said more homes been evacuated - finally in afternoon is said would be fixed 12- 16 hours, as in midnight! Tried to ring around and find out if safe to go home and grab some clothes. Vector said ring United networks (who are not listed as that in phone book...) United Networks said they didn't know - talk to someone on site! Managed to get home and pack a bag and drop into work to grab laptop for Vestry meeting that night. Stayed away and back today. Apparently only a tempory fix done, will be completely mended later in week. Construction work is all go - so must be fine??
Bad timing all around. Just when you think you are safe to relax......
